Riding Instructor
I welcome all styles of riding, believing that the basics are the same for all. You will see a strong "dressage" influence in my teaching, which I believe is essential for successful communication with the horse. I concentrate on "balance" not a particular style. I agree with and follow the education and safety format of the United States Pony Club.
I give instruction in hunt seat, dressage and western styles of riding. I will teach you more than just the riding skills. I feel it is important to learn all aspects of horse care, safety and horsemanship.

Getting Started
What is required to take my first lesson?
You don't need to have your own horse to learn how to ride. If you don't have one, I'll provide one for you. What you will need are the following: well fitted jeans or long pants, high socks, a shoe or boot with a low heel (no tennis shoes or sandals).
Who takes riding lessons at Frost Bit Farm?
- Children ages 7 and up, and adults of all ages (Sorry, I can not except anyone under the age of 7 for lessons at this time)
- Beginners, seeing their first horse in person, to intermediate riders who compete at horse shows
- People who ride our horses and people who own their own horse
What types of lessons are taught at Frost Bit Farm?
- Various forms of riding are taught. You can take English hunt seat lessons, Dressage lessons or even Western Riding lessons.
- At your first lessons, handling the horse, grooming and tacking up(putting saddle and bridle on the horse) are taught. Then, once I'm sure that you can do it, and you feel ready, I'll ask you to come about 30 minutes before your lesson and get your horse or pony, groom it, and tack it up. Then, you can be in the arena at the scheduled time of your lesson and ride for about an hour before untacking and grooming your horse again.
- Private Lessons - these lessons are one student with one instructor and one horse/pony partner for one hour. (Private lessons are mandatory for beginner students until I am certain you can control your horse in a group setting.)
- Semi Private Lessons - these lessons are basically the same as private lessons except two or three student of the same riding level and two to three horses participate. (Group lessons are not always available for your level of riding)
- Beginning Students MUST take private lessons first.
When can I take a lesson at Frost Bit Farm?
- Lessons are held Monday thru Saturday. You pick a day and time that works for you and me (the instructor) and you keep that lesson time week after week. If you need to cancel a lesson, you must cancel 24 hours in advance in order to avoid charges.
- Lessons are not held if the temperature drops below 20 degrees or if it is excessively windy, precipitating or if lightning is in the vicinity.
- I suggest you take a minium of one lesson per week, and I encourage two lessons per week for maximum progress.
- You may come and practice on the lesson horses after I have given you permission and if it does not interfere with other students lessons. Ask me for more details about practice riding.
Are there other details I need to know?
We provide a helmet for your first few lessons. After that, it is best for you to purchase your own helmet. Helmets are required for all lessons and anytime while riding on Frost Bit Farm property.
Riders will find also that buying "riding clothes" will assist and help improve riding abilities.
You will be required to sign a liability release prior to your activities at the stable. I will also require the you read and memorize our Quick List of Rules and Regulations.
